INTRODUCTION
The Department of Civil Engineering studies and develops the skills of construction to change and improve the natural environment for the advancement of national welfare; a national land development, citizen housing space construction and industrial base making, in order to minimize the rate of natural environmental disruption and natural disasters. There are structural engineering, hydraulics and environmental engineering, soil mechanics and the survey mechanics as subfields. In structural mechanics, the structural design and the development of new structural materials are dealt with. The qualitative and quantitative supplement and management of water resources are studied in hydraulic engineering. In soil mechanics, ground formation and rock configuration is studied. The movement of soil and rock is analyzed so they can be connected to the stability of structures and the skill of profitable soil development. Survey analysis of three-dimensional images, photo surveys and reflex data of earth satellites provide geographical information for the basis of the nationally-scoped construction department.

After graduation, the qualified students enter many state-run trade associations connected with construction such as the Rural Development Corporation, Korea Land Corporation, and the Construction Department. Students also work as public servants in construction fields such as provincial offices, city halls, and as teachers. The graduates are especially sought after for the West Coast Express Way, and the development of residential areas in rural and in the large-scale reclamation works on the West and South Coasts.
